It’s a frequent assignment, and one which every student dreads: write an essay on writing. After all, who wants to write an essay on a topic they know little and care less about? But here you are, stuck with this assignment. What to do?
You could start by reading someone else’s essay. Essays on writing are great to read; it’s always surprising how much even talented writers struggle with their craft. Maybe something about another writer’s essay would strike you as interesting, and you could elaborate on it in your own essay. Even if you can’t find any use for the content, a published essay can at least serve as a good model for writing your own essay.
Just because you are assigned to write an essay on writing does not mean that writing it has to be a miserable experience. This is a great chance to be true to your feelings and really express yourself. As long as you’re prepared to back up your points with specific examples, whether you love writing or hate it, you shouldn’t be shy to tell the truth about what writing is to you.
